To encourage the use, enjoyment and preservation of lake burley griffin
March 2023
Lake Burley Griffin meanders through Australia's national capital, Canberra. It's the centrepiece of the city, a great recreation area and vantage point to see some of Canberra's famous landscapes and landmarks. It was conceived as an artificial lake by American architect Walter Burley Griffin and a central feature of his plan which won the 1912 design competition for the new capital. Despite enthusiastic beginnings, the development of Griffin's vision was a slow process. Two world wars, the Great Depression and a number of political and bureaucratic disputes hindered the allocation of resources and slowed progress before the lake was officially opened by then Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies, on 17 October 1964. Surrounded by rolling hills and mountain ranges, it is home to breathtaking sunrises and sunsets, with a thriving water sports community on it and a cosmopolitan lifestyle beside it.
For those of you interested in photography, the lake is filled with opportunities that change with the seasons. Extensive walking and cycling paths surround it and there are plenty of open spaces to picnic or just relax and enjoy the view. You can enjoy a lake cruise on the MV Southern Cross, or you can take to the water by kayak, sailboat, stand-up-paddle board, GoBoat or perhaps join a rowing team or enjoy a spot of fishing.
Whether you're a local or tourist, Lake Burley Griffin has lots to offer, so have a look around. There are regular updates to the information and the photo sales page. There you might find a memento for your home or a gift to encourage others to visit Australia's capital and enjoy the lake. Your support through advertising and the purchase of photos and other products helps keep this site afloat. It's a work in progress with over 300 shots online at the moment and more to come, so stay tuned.
A comprehensive directory of businesses and services located around the lake will be online shortly.
